The I & Me of Life
Michael O'Faolain

The I is for the inner self
The Me is that outer shelf
So to look a little more inside
We need to unlock that door we hide.

Me can be a lot of things in life
I can have joy and suffer strife
But when trouble comes with pain
Its I who suffers in vain
For the consequences of me
Can leave I ill as ease
And torment becomes confusion
Our sweet life takes on delusion.

For bank, promotion, holiday and home
Can make Me feel secure and not alone
But fate can strip assets and goal
And once more I must take the roll.

The I that knows its boundary lines
Will preserve them with heart and mind
To share it with so few called friends
That’s the freedom for the I within.

But the me that has too many friends
Will pay the price with foe and fend
That’s the lesson life teaches to us all
To trust but few and love them all.

To find and love the I
Is something like a clear blue sky
To know the clouds will pass
Even if they appear in mass.
