The River of Life
Michael O'Faolain

As a mountain water tomb
Is a foetus in a womb
As a gorge to a stream
Is a baby to its dream.

As a stream to a brook
Does a baby find its roots
But the instinct of the flow
Is the way child should grow

As a child grows to teens
So a river leaves the stream
To find its chosen way in life
Does the river seek its dykes.

As a youth grows to grace
Does a river find its pace
To flit and jest and sow
Does the water fall and flow.

As a river fails by push
A person slows by rush
As a storm makes it swell
Does the human hear the bell.

As the flood cleans the river bed
We should rest and clear our head
As it flows on to the lake
We become aware of life and fate.

As it breathes new life to the lake
We should leave good feeling in our wake
And as it flow sfromlake to sea
So we join with it on an even keel.
